Music provides a powerful and distinctive form of expression and contributes to the development of each child. Music can change the way children feel, think and act; it affects emotion and moods providing opportunity for personal expression, reflection and emotional well-being. Music develops thinking, increasing perception, imagination, creativity and physical co-ordination – skills which can be transferred to other areas of learning and life. Music enables children to define themselves in relation to others, their friends, social groups and contributes to their cultural understanding. Every child at Ethelbert Road Primary School enjoys music curriculum time each week; we also sing together as part of assemblies. In addition to this, every child in the school can opt to join one of the many clubs that operate daily from singing groups to orchestras.
Arrangements can be made for children to learn instruments such as the violin, cello, and piano, through our appointed team of Instrumental Instructors. These experienced tutors are music graduates who have an excellent track record – they ensure that pupils enjoy their lessons and make progress, having opportunities to gain awards and enter music grade exams. Instrument lessons are taught in school, during the school day, and are paid for by parents. Parents requiring further information should contact the school office who will be pleased to provide further details. (Please note that timetables for music tuition rotate so that children do not leave class for the same part of a lesson each week – every effort is made to ensure other aspects of learning are maximised.)
Performance and Wider Opportunities
Children’s progress and attainment in all aspects of music is celebrated through termly recitals and concerts, and with opportunities to perform in public both in school, at productions or at local concerts.
