General Information

Throughout years 1 and 2 we aim to develop the children’s independence and provide them with the tools and skills they need to become successful learners.  We encourage the children to tackle new challenges head on and never be afraid to make mistakes.  Throughout Key Stage 1, learning is an adventure and we aim to make learning as creative and hands on as possible.
We encourage the children to be proud of the work they produce and presentation is of a high standard.  The children love sharing their work and have a growing confidence in themselves, working hard to achieve their full potential.

Years 1 & 2

Within the first term of year one, we have been focusing on stories with a familiar setting, often relating these to our Topic for the term. The children are exposed to a wider range of texts including a variety of non-fiction such as instructions, information texts and recounts, as well as a range of fictional texts. Throughout the year we will be focusing on Christmas poems and continuing to relate our literacy to the topics. With consistent high expectations of all children, they are aware of the importance of the presentation of work and considering sentence structure including using capital letters and full stops.

As a school we have a clear focus on reading and we encourage the children to read every day at home as well as at school. Guided reading is carried out on a daily basis enabling children to read many different texts. We make it very evident to the children how important reading is and how much we enjoy reading as adults in order to enthuse them further.

The children in year 2 will learn about writing in a range of styles and become exposed to a wider range of genres and text types. We begin the year learning about stories with familiar settings, looking at well-loved children’s authors and writing in a more creative and sophisticated style. The children learn about playing with words, rhyming patterns and shapes in poetry before writing some Christmas poems. Also throughout the year the children explore some aspects of non-fiction including instruction writing, information texts and recounting.

The children love to read and we encourage the children to read as much as possible and share their love of books with others. In year 2 we aim to develop the children’s reading comprehension, exploring a range of texts and retrieving information. During each school day we have differentiated Guided Reading and Letters and Sounds sessions.

Numeracy becomes more structured in year one but we consistently ensure we support children’s learning through the use of practical activities. We familiarise the children with addition and subtraction and secure their understanding with these particular number operations, also working on doubling and halving. We use very practical learning strategies to teach children money, time and measurement and provide a variety of hands on learning experiences. The children are provided with opportunities for daily mental maths at the beginning of every numeracy lesson.

Throughout Year 2 we explore a range of number concepts .  We aim to increase the children’s rapid recall of number facts to 100 with regular quick fire mental maths games and activities.  The children also become more confident with more structured methods for the four operations (+, -, x, ÷ ) and learn how to use and apply these to real life scenarios.  The children also learn about telling the time and using money which we encourage them to practice at home and out about.

The children also gain a deeper understanding of shape and space, learning the correct terminology for the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, as well as using nets.  The children will also learn about directions and positions, understanding angles and programming BeeBot toys. A large focus in year 2 mathematics is developing the children’s ability to solve problems involving strategies and logic.

Art & DT

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world around us. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.  They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.

The aims of art and design are:

  • to enable children to record from first-hand experience and from imagination and to select their own ideas to use in their work;
  • to develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities;
  • to improve the children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques;
  • to increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art, craft and design in different times and cultures;
  • to develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and materials;
  • to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists and designers.

We provide a rich environment in which we encourage and value creativity. Children experience a wide range of activities that they respond to, using the various senses. We give them the opportunity to work alongside artists and other adults as well as visits to experience the work of professional artists. The activities that they take part in are imaginative and enjoyable.

In Key Stage 1 children learn about the life and works of Spanish artist Picasso, using his abstract work to learn about portraiture, the features of our face, pencil techniques, and mixing colours. We explore building design and draw from the children’s own imagination. We design our own masks using the festival masks from Africa and China as a starting point looking at real artefacts to inspire learning.  We use a vast variety of medium: Clay, collage, paint, card, pastels, and textiles and many other recycled materials.

Design and Technology

Design Technology helps children to become problem solvers through practical tasks, using creativity and imagination. It represents an essential aspect of individual development to which all children are entitled. It develops the knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes that enable our children to engage in a broad range of creative activities in response to identifying needs and problems. We learn to think, explore and discover about the larger world of industry, commerce and business. It involves having ideas and making judgements, manipulation materials, systems and equipment. It generates creative capability that can be applied to real life situations. It develops complex skills and abilities enabling pupils to exercise control over the quality of man made environments, systems and artefacts. The purpose of design technology is that it draws its information from human knowledge and is concerned with the manipulation of materials and systems to meet human needs.

In key stage 1 we design and make our own lighthouse models using our science knowledge to light it using a simple circuit with bulb and battery. We learn to design and make healthy soups, looking at the packaging and doing our own market research to inform our decisions. We share ideas and design our own cupcake and packaging. We learn how to shape card and use tools effectively and accurately to create simple mechanisms from card and paper. We also learn about wheels and axles so to design and make our own emergency vehicle. Children use felt to sew their own Christmas stockings.
