Severe Snow/Ice Plan for Parents – PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY
Every winter brings the possibility of snow and ice. Extreme bad weather can cause widespread and prolonged disruption. Schools are often affected and it can be difficult to maintain an education service.
As a fundamental principle, every effort is made to keep our school open. However, we may close due to ‘unavoidable’ circumstances. Those circumstances being that it is no longer safe for staff or pupils to be on site.
We recognise that it is important our school remains open, so parents are able to work and pupils can continue to learn. Ethelbert Road Primary School will make every effort to prepare for severe snow/ice this winter by gritting pathways, clearing access points etc.
How will we let you know if the school is closed?
If we do experience severe snow/ice resulting in hazardous conditions, I may have to take the decision to close the school. This decision is usually made by 7.45am. Once this decision has been made, we will notify parents via the School Texting service. We will NOT be using the Kent School Closure sites to notify you.
Please Note – often The Abbey School has to close when it snows as they have a much bigger site to make safe. If it snows and we remain open ALL CHILDREN will require a packed lunch as the Abbey School kitchens may be closed or the lunches may not be able to be delivered. So, if snow is forecast please ensure that you have appropriate provisions to be able to provide your child with a packed lunch if necessary.
What can you do to help?
·         If your child attends breakfast club please do not leave home until you have the confirmation that the school will be open.
·         On snow days we may ask you to please enter the school via the front door. Staff will be on hand to help the children change their boots and clothes. It is helpful if parents stay outside as this reduces the amount of snow / wet in the school.
·         Provide a packed lunch from home in case school meals cannot be provided.
·         Don’t forget suitable warm clothing – gloves, hats, scarves, wellies etc. or even a change of clothing.
Many thanks for your support in helping Ethelbert Road Primary School remain open during periods of severe snow/ice.
