Years 3 & 4
Pupils in these years make up our lower Key Stage 2 Class
In Years 3 & 4 we strive to ensure a smooth transition is made for all children from KS1 into KS2. Expectations are naturally raised from KS1 with a focus on individual progression and improved presentation. There is a move away from the more play based learning evident in KS1; however, learning is still made FUN and engaging for the children. Children are positively encouraged to be more independent, for example: changing their own books and to take greater ownership of their learning. In the Lower KS2 children are also introduced to timed assessments.
In Years 3 & 4 we aim to instill a love of reading within the children. They are introduced to a wide variety of literature, varying from adventure and mystery books to fascinating non-fiction books on wildlife. The focus is on giving the children those core skills of being competent readers with a good level of comprehension, in preparation for Upper KS2.
As with all areas of a child’s learning we really aim to inspire our children to become amazing writers; confident in using the correct grammar, punctuation and composition. It is our main objective to provide the necessary core skills to engender confidence and pride in their writing.
In Years 3 & 4 a strong emphasis is placed on teaching the children mental strategies to aid quick and reliable number calculations. We also aim to ensure a deeper understanding of the different methods used for the four operations ( + – x ÷ ). Children are also introduced to Times Tables – with the ultimate objective of enabling rapid recall of all of their times tables. A lot of investigative and problem solving work is also introduced to ensure children can apply their conceptual knowledge appropriately to solve specific problems.
In Years 3 & 4 scientific investigation is actively encouraged. A wide variety of skills are taught that cover the 3 main strands of chemistry, physics and biology. Areas such as: the ability to make predictions, accurately record observations and beginning to draw scientific conclusions using scientific language are just some of the core skills taught in the lower KS2.
In line with the modern technological era we now live in, ICT plays a very important role within Years 3 & 4. Children are introduced to modern devices and are taught key skills that are highly transferrable. As well as the teaching of core ICT skills, ICT is used across the curriculum, in most subjects, to create a vibrant and stimulating environment where learning is enhanced accordingly. Important aspects of e-safety are also introduced, where potential dangers are highlighted to ensure children are safe at all times when using ICT.
As a country we are steeped in rich, fascinating History. As a result we endeavour to build a great love and passion for this subject within the school. Captivating topics such as: The Romans Invasion & settlement in Britain; the differences between rich & poor in Tudor times; and why did Henry VIII marry 6 times are all covered in Years 3 & 4. The children’s Historical enquiry skills are extended; children are taught how to begin ordering Historical events on time-lines, analyse and interpret primary and secondary sources, with our ultimate aim to inspire a thirst for knowledge throughout their lives.
Geography is a subject that the children have a keen interest in. The human and physical environment impacts directly on their lives, and in Years 3 & 4 we feel it is very important to nurture and actively encourage their inquisitive minds. Exciting and practical lessons really help facilitate the children’s learning. Investigating rivers, learning about how and where we spend our time and learning about maps are just some of the Topics covered.
In Years 3 & 4, the children are taught about the major different religions of the world. From Islam to Christianity they are introduced to the different beliefs and cultures that make the world we live in such an interesting and diverse place. Children are taught to understand and appreciate the importance of respect, community and family in today’s multi-cultural society.
In PSHCE a wide variety of Topics are covered throughout Years 3 & 4, which enable children to feel safe, confident and valued members of the school and of wider society in general. Areas covered include: citizenship, staying safe, financial education, keeping healthy, e-safety and children’s social and emotional health. These all teach children key skills and strategies for helping deal with a wide variety of problems they may encounter at some point in their young lives.
This is a very important aspect of the curriculum that teaches the children a wide variety of skills. From learning fine and gross motor skills to learning good leadership and team building skills, children are encouraged to become active and competent in a wide range of sports and disciplines. In Years 3 & 4 we place a real importance on celebrating active participation in sport, regardless of ability. The positive effects of regular physical participation are made clear, as good health and well-being are intrinsically linked with regular exercise.
Modern Foreign Language
Through song, dance, visual and oral exposure to Modern Foreign Language (Spanish), children in Years 3 & 4 have great fun in learning a whole new language. The children become increasingly confident in both speaking and listening, and continue to build on a bank of words and phrases in a language spoken by numerous countries throughout the world.
In Years 3 & 4, children are given the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of music. This includes performing, listening to and interpreting music from a wide range of cultures and genres. Some Topics taught include: Painting with sounds, exploring rhythmic pattern and exploring singing games.
Art and Design.
Year 3 and 4 children explore pattern and printing techniques. Children learn to use a variety of tools to use effectively to engrave polystyrene tiles to print and to use clay to make coil pots. This links very closely to their history topic ‘The Ancient Greeks’. Children also learn to paint in the style of Tudor artist Hans Holbein, portraits and mixing flesh tones, learn to draw a figure in action and learn about Russian artist Kandinsky and his melodic style of art.
The Roman Gods and Goddesses are also a great stimulus for us to create a plaque using clay and oil pastel.
Leonardo Da Vinci’s anatomy studies provide an excellent vehicle to link our artwork with our science topic ‘Moving and Growing’. We learn about the life and works of Leonardo Da Vinci and make observational sketches, using soft pencils, charcoal and pastel, of bones from the human skeleton.
In year 3 and 4 we use our own town to help us explore the design and architecture around us. The Tudor buildings are a great stimulus to support learning in the construction of Tudor buildings and which materials were used and why. Children then take that experience and design and make their own models. We explore and evaluate a number of moving picture books and learn about paper mechanisms, to support our own designs to make a moving picture book. Creating a moving monster is a great way to learn about the pneumatic system and children love experimenting with balloons, syringes, plastic tubing and air to create the system and then demonstrate their knowledge by design their own imaginative creature.
